This desert has special meaning as there is a road between the Nile Valley and Quseir that was once called ROHANO, “Road of the Gods.” Along this route, are the ancient gold mines of the Egyptians from the Pharaonic period, who came for the gold in this area for stones needed for temples and coffins. Many of the hieroglyphic symbols can be found carved into the rocks of the stony mountains—at Bir Umm Fawakir, the rock pictures at Wadi Russumat, and the vast Roman settlement at Mons Claudius . To explore this mysterious terrain, you can choose to travel by 4 x 4 safari jeep, quad bike, camel, or by foot. Choose from a half or full day trip.

Al Quseir: Such Beauty, Such Charm, Such HistoryAnyone visiting Al Quseir would be impressed by what the village of yesterday has become today: a charming town vibrating within a mixture of Old World traditionalism with the modern influences of the New World. Both visitors and residents can admire an ancient heritage, historic buildings from various earlier civilizations, and a picturesque seafront setting. Equally impressive is the attention from the locals in preserving the beauty by commissioning artists and sculptors to create fountains, sculptures, and murals throughout the town. With about 70,000 residents, Quseir is evolving but it seems to continue its long history as a thriving Egyptian community. In modern times, Al Quseir has grown from a fishing village mainly inhabited by the Adabda, a Bedouin tribe of this region to an industrious mining town to a combination of both with an infusion of the tourist trade. As more hotels and resorts dot the southern Red Sea Coast, the landscape is changing into a colorful destination.
Al Quseir is one of the most desirous places in Egypt -140 kilometers south of Hurghada and 120 north of Mars Alam; here one may go scuba diving in the Red Sea, or spend a comfortable afternoon sunbathing on an isolated pristine beach, and then, whenever the mood strikes, inspect some of the amazing historical sites located conveniently nearby.
Although nowadays one can enjoy all the commodities of modern life, it's still a very exciting experience to wander through the cobbled-stoned paths of Quseir, admiring the houses, both old and renovated, perhaps attracted by the sight of a beautifully carved door or an ornate balcony and eventually discovering that you are lost to a time long passed. Local
officials are trying to ensure the city's heritage is kept safe. Old buildings built in the classic French and British styles, with large terraces and wooden balconies, are being protected from being sold and demolished. These houses were constructed for the rich merchants and some are as many as three or four hundred years old.
The Islamic influence is still found in the exquisite architecture displayed by many of the buildings in town, with their intricate wooden terraces and mashrabiyyas. These balconies had a lot more to contribute to the buildings than their beauty. Besides helping to block the sunshine, they were designed to catch the breeze which is then transformed into air currents moving throughout the house, providing good ventilation and comfort, again, a real necessity during the hottest part of the summer. Moreover, the wood was carved in such a way that it was easy to look outside while remaining hidden from public view.
